5 Ways to prevent a cold this winter, winter is here and some of us have probably already experienced a little “winter sniffle”. This time of year, can be tricky for Complementary Therapists; working in such close proximity with the general public means we are often exposed to common winter bugs and viruses. Sadly, it often means therapists are tucked up at home, trying to recover in order to can get back to work.

There are some nasty bugs going around at the moment, so we’ve compiled a list of effective precautions you can take to try and avoid colds and flu this season.

  • Enjoy Your Bed This Winter
    During the winter months, many of us actually need a little more sleep compared to the summer. It’s all about our body’s natural desire to hibernate. If we deprive our body and brain of those precious winter z’s, the first thing to suffer is our immune system. Sleep is medicine and preventative medicine at that!
  • Sweat A Little
    Exercising and sweating regularly enhances immune function and a strong immune system means a strong and resilient body. As the old saying goes “if you don’t use it, you lose it”.
  • Resist The Itch!
    Our eyes and nose are the most common found places where germs and viruses like to hibernate. Resist the urge constantly touch your eyes and nose with your hands. Instead, use a tissue to blow your nose and maybe some essential oils to clear the bunged-up feeling. Place warm flannels over your eyelids if they are irritating you. This will soothe the irritation and relax the muscles.
  • Food Is Medicine
    During the winter months, dark leafy vegetables and citrus fruits are the way to go. All high in Vitamin C, antioxidants and minerals, it’s these things the immune system needs when the weather conditions are challenging.
  • Smiling Is the New Lemsip
    We all know that smiling makes us feel good. However, new studies have shown that smiling can trick your brain into feeling content, even if you’re feeling rotten. When we feel content, our body is ambient. So, if you’re on the verge of getting ill, perhaps smiling more could ward off those nasties!
